Dominating this splendid
Georgian city is its Anglican cathedral, built between
1880 and 1910. The city has a long history as a port. Today
a pleasant boat trip can be enjoyed starting from the
old docks at Truro along the River Fal to Falmouth.
Truro is a town that
grew in prosperity from the tin mining industry, but it has
also always been important as a market town serving a large
rural community. In recent years as road links have improved
Truro has become the dominant shopping centre of Cornwall
and consequently the location of big national retail stores.
Water constantly flows along the edges of the picturesque
cobbled streets in gutters that were especially designed so
that horses could drink.
As Cornwall's centre
for commerce and culture Truro is the home of:
Cornwall County Council, County Court,
Royal Cornwall Museum and the Hall
for Cornwall
During the summer months
and at Christmas time Truro's streets are alive with activity
and entertainment.
